In Japan, it is necessary to report immediately a marriage, birth or death to the nearest local government office (city, town, ward). It is also necessary to report a divorce.

Reporting of marriage
    • A foreign national must prepare the following items when reporting his/her marriage for recording on his/her alien registration card:
      1) The marriage registry document (Please receive from the local government office).
      2) Documents recording the marriage as issued by your Embassy or the government of your country (with translations)
      3) Birth certificates (with translations)
      4) Passport
      5) Alien registration card
      *The name, address and official stamp of the person that did the translations are necessary.
      *If you are marrying a non-Japanese, depending on the particular case, the type of documents required may vary. Please contact your local government office and get their advice beforehand.
Reporting of birth
    • Births must be reported within 14 days of the day when the birth took place.
    • Place where notification should take place: The area where the birth took place or the area where the person who carries out the notification procedures is residing.
    • Items required when reporting a birth:
      1) Birth notification form with the birth certificate attached.
      2) Mother and Child Health Record Book
      *Obtain the birth certificate from the hospital where the birth took place.
      *After reporting the birth, apply for alien registration card for the child.
Reporting of death
    • A death must be reported within 7 days.
    • The death must be reported in the area where it occurred or in the area where the person reporting the death resides.
    • Items necessary to report a death:
      1) A death report form with the death certificate attached.
      2) Application for permission to bury the deceased.
      *Be sure to turn in the alien registration card of the deceased.

  • Proof of notification/reporting:
    As necessary, it is possible to receive an official document that certifies that you have notified the local government office of a marriage, birth or death.
