REENTRY

REENTRY
In cases where a foreign national residing in Japan wishes to leave Japan temporarily for trip, business, etc., before leaving Japan he must apply for Reentry Permission. If a foreign national leaves Japan without obtaining formal permission to reenter, he must reapply for a visa. Therefore, please be sure to apply for your Reentry Permission when temporarily leaving Japan.
  • Reentry Permission: Types and Features
    In principle, permission to reenter the country is limited to a single time under the Reentry Permission system. However, for foreign nationals who must enter and leave Japan frequently, it is possible to receive permission for multiple reentries. The handling fee for multiple reentry permission differs from single reentry.

  • Applying for Reentry
    [ Necessary documents for application ]
    • The documents specified as necessary by the local Immigration Office
    • Passport
    • Alien Registration card
    • For students, it is necessary to Student Status Certificate (If you Status of Residence is the student category)
    • Also, for students, a formal Certificate of Permission for Temporary Absence from your school or university is required.

      Note : if a student is applying for multiple reentry, there are cases where he made be asked to submit formal documents that establish the reasons for his need for multiple reentry permission.

      Fee for Single Reentry Permission: 3,000 yen (Must be paid using official revenue stamps)
      Fee for Multiple Reentry Permission: 6,000 yen (Must be paid using official revenue stamps)

    Note :
    • The length of the period for which the Reentry Permission is granted must not exceed the applicant's current Period of Residence. The foreign national applicant must return within the period for which the Reentry Permission has been granted or reentry will not be permitted. The maximum period for which permission to reenter is granted is 3 years.
    • In a case where the foreign national applicant receives permission for reentry and temporarily leaves the country, it is not required that he turn in his Alien Registration card. It is permissible to take one's Alien Registration card overseas. However, please take care not to lose it.
