Passport renewals; extensions; changes

  • Passport Renewal/Extension
    Documents required (Personal passport):
    1) Passport
    2) Certification of Alien Registration
    3) Alien Registration Card
    4) 3 x 4cm pictures (2) (Should be cut to proper size before submission.)
    5) Application form (Available at the related counter)

  • Changing from an Official Passport to a Personal Passport
    Documents required:
    1) One original and one copy of the applicant's Official Certificate of Resignation. The Certificate should contain the following items:
    1. Reasons for ending employment and remuneration relationship with former China employer.
    2. Statement that applicant will have no further employment or remuneration relationship with his/her former China employer.
    Or, in place of the above: A formal written declaration by the former China employer that it agrees with the changeover from an official passport to a personal passport.
    2) Alien Registration Card
    3) Certificate of Employment
    4) Passport and Certification of Alien Registration
    5) 2 pictures
    6) Application form (Obtained from the related Immigration Office personnel)
    • Amount of time required for change : Approximately one week
    • Fee for making change : 8,000 yen.
  • The documents required sometimes change. Therefore, be sure to check concerning what documents are required and prepare them in advance.

  • Extending the Period of Stay and Changing Status of Residence

    1. Extending the Period of Stay

      In a case where it is necessary in order to continue the one's same activity beyond the current period of stay and remain in Japan a longer time, it is necessary to apply for an extension of the period of stay. It should be noted that application for an extended period of stay is not necessarily granted.

      • The documents specified as necessary by the local Immigration Office(Note)
      • Passport
      • Alien Registration card

      These items should be presented at the Immigration Office. The handling fee for extension applications is 4,000 yen.

      Note : Depending on the status of residence of the individual, the specified documents to be presented may differ. For details concerning this matter, please contact your local Immigration Office.

    2. Changing Status of Residence

      In a case where the individual wishes to cease work/activities related to change his Status of Residence in order to be able to do other work/activities, it is necessary to submit an application to change the foreign resident's Status of Residence.

      • Alien Registration card

      These items should be presented at the Immigration Office. The handling fee for extension applications is 4,000 yen.
