National health insurance systems
- In Japan, the health insurance system consists mainly of the government National Health Insurance systems administered by the local ward, city or town and the Social Health Insurance system that is organized on a company basis. It is necessary for persons living in Japan to belong to one or the other of these two systems.

- Qualifications for eligibility for joining the National Health Insurance program
- Persons who are registered aliens and are not participating in (company)Social Insurance system.
- Persons who can prove that they have been in Japan one year or more.
*Persons that have diplomatic, official business or short stay visa status
are not qualified to participate.
- Procedures for joining the National Health Insurance system
- To complete procedures for joining the National Health Insurances system, it is necessary to go to the National Health Insurance section at the local government office in your ward, city or town of residence.
- Health Insurance Card
- After you have completed the necessary procedures, your National Health Insurance Card will be mailed to you.
- If your address, name or other items change, it is required that these changes be reported within 14 days.
- Your National Health Insurance Card must be returned if you depart from Japan or change your residence to another city.
- Health Insurance Tax
- Please pay your Health Insurance Tax at a bank or savings bank using the payment forms that will be sent to you.
- Receiving National Health Insurance benefits
- If you are suffering from illness or injuries and receive medical examinations and treatment at a medical service organization that belongs to the National Health Insurance system, 70% of the costs of treatment will be borne by city, ward or town where you reside. The patient pays for the remaining 30%.
- In the case of a birth, you will receive a special one-time benefit for birth.
- In the event of a death, a fixed sum funeral expenses allowance will be paid to the person that carried out the funeral.

| Nursing Care Insurance System |
| To assure that aging persons are cared for, from April 2000, the Nursing Care Insurance system has been in operation.
In the case of Japan, nursing care in connection with old age has been a major source of anxiety. In order to relieve worries about the availability of nursing care, a system to provide all Japanese citizens with nursing care will be built.
Persons of 40 years and older will receive premiums up until the time of their death. |

- Insurance payments
- Payments for insurance vary by the amount of money that you earn.
- Payments will taken out of your monthly salary.
- Total payments are divided with the employer paying half and the employee paying half.
- Insurance benefits
- In the case of illness or injuries, if you receive medical examinations and treatment at a medical service organization that belongs to the Social Insurance system, 80% of the costs of treatment will be covered by the insurance and only the remaining 20% is paid by the patient to the medical
service organization.
- In addition, in cases where the medical treatment costs for a single month are very high, a special allowance will be paid in some cases.
- If you are unable to report for work because of illness or injuries and you do not receive pay for the days you are absent, a special sickness and injury allowance will be paid.
- If an insured person gives birth, they will receive a special one-time allowance for birth.
- If a person insured by the system passes away, a special funeral allowance will be paid.
