Responding to an emergency

Coping with emergencies
  • Call 110 in emergencies (Police)
If you discover a burglar or there is a problem involving violence, or a serious accident and you must call the police, use this number: 110.

    • In case of an accident
If you are involved in a traffic accident :
      1. Note down the license number of the other car.
      2. Get the other driver to show you his license so that you can confirm his name and address.
      3. Immediately call 110.
      4. If you have been injured (especially injuries involving the head or neck), there is always danger that there will be after-effects so that you should go to a hospital and have a doctor examine you whether you feel the injuries or minor or not.

If you have injured another person :
      1. Help the injured person.
      2. Call 110 immediately.

    Police box
There are police boxes located throughout most areas in Japan. The policemen stationed at a specific police box patrol the area, handle lost articles and give persons who are lost directions.

  • 119: Fires and other emergency situations involving the fire department

    • When a fire occurs, Dial 119.
This number is used both to call fire trucks and also to call an ambulance. Please remember: "119" is for fire trucks and ambulances.
If the fire is still very small, you can use a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. Cover your mouth with a towel and try to be careful not to inhale any smoke or gasses. However, if the fire burns up as high as the ceiling, it is impossible to put it out yourself with a fire extinguisher so that you should get out of the building immediately.

    • Calling for an ambulance
In cases of sudden sickness and accidents, you should call an ambulance. There is no charge for calling an ambulance, but if the incident involves mild sickness or limited injures where it possible to take the person to the hospital using your car, or a taxi, you should avoid using an ambulance. If you have called an ambulance, get ready with your health insurance card and some cash. When you hear the siren, go outside and guide the ambulance. If you have a doctor that you always use or a hospital that you use, direct the ambulance to take you there.

In order to be able to notify the other party of your address at the time of an emergency, you should practice from time to time.

Using a fire extinguisher

1) Pull the safety (locking) pin out

2) Aim the hose in the direction of the fire.

3) Grip the lever (under the handle).
When extinguishing a fire, you should direct the spray bit by bit toward the source of the fire. You should crouch down so that you can direct the spray into the side of the item that is burning.
