Periodic vehicle inspection procedures

Vehicle Inspection Procedures
In the case of on-going vehicle inspections, it is possible to receive a vehicle inspection at one of the Vehicle Inspection Center located throughout Japan. However, in the case of inspections of new vehicles, special vehicles or vehicles that have been modified, such inspections can only be carried at specially specified Vehicle Inspection Centers with jurisdiction for the area where the vehicle is to be used.
  • User Inspections
The car user can take the car directly to a Vehicle Inspection Center himself and receive a "user inspection".

    1. Vehicle Inspections are carried out in accordance with the Vehicle Inspection Standards Law. If you have difficulties carrying out the procedures, it is probably better to turn the matter over to a local vehicle maintenance shop.

    2. The inspection and maintenance information is recorded in the inspection check records.

    3. Make a reservation for vehicle inspection at a nearby maintenance garage (They accept reservations for inspection checks and related maintenance from a week before the inspection is planned).

    4. On the day of the inspection, all the necessary documents related to the inspection must be presented. The user then follows the inspection procedure course himself.
      1. Vehicle Inspection Certificate
      2. Vehicle Tax Receipt Certificates
      3. Check and Maintenance Record
      4. Car Insurance Certificate
      5. Vehicle Weight Class Tax with Tax Stamp affixed
      6. Follow-up inspection Application (Form #3)
      7. Follow-up Vehicle Inspection Certificate/ Receipt for fee with tax stamp affixed.

Note : In the case of the items listed item "5" and onward, these items can be procured from a nearby public notary in the area.

    5. When the user has passed the Vehicle Inspection, a new Vehicle Inspection sticker will be affixed to the windshield of the car.

  • Privately Operated Inspection Maintenance Garages
These are garages where there are inspecting personnel available, along with the proper equipment, that have been approved by the Ministry of Transportation. They are able to carry out official Vehicle Inspection procedures.

  • Certified Garages
These are garages that are approved by the government to carry out engine and brake system maintenance. After the vehicle has been checked (at the time of the 24 month inspection), the vehicle can receive an official inspection at a government Vehicle Inspection Center. A representative of the user can take the vehicle to the Inspection Center and have the inspection carried out.
