Putting out the trash
Trash must be put out at the designated spot for your residence. Based on the type of trash, the collection day is different. Therefore, it is necessary to follow the rules. The different categories of trash are listed below. The way trash is divided and the number of times a month that it is collected differs by different areas. Information about the system is posted in your neighborhood. Please refer to that or ask at your local government office concerning the proper way handle trash.

  • It is advisable to put out trash by 8:00 in the morning of the day when it is scheduled to be collected.

  • Be sure to use the type of trash bags specified by the local area. In the Tokyo area, use the type of bags specified by the Tokyo Municipal Government.

Combustible trash
Kitchen garbage, paper, cigarette butts, grass, waste fiber materials, paper containers, etc.
Non-combustible trash
Includes unburnable refuse and trash that will emit poisonous gasses if it incinerated. Plastic products, rubber items, vinyl products, styrene foam, ceramic products, artificial leather, glass items, metal items, ashes, etc.
Resource trash
Newspapers, magazines, cardboard, drink containers, cans, etc.
Large-sized trash
Furniture, home appliances, bicycles, clothes drying stands, mattresses, tricycles, stoves, etc.
Other
  • PET bottles, styrene foam, milk cartons, etc. are being collected for recycling by some super markets to help protect the environment. Everyone should take advantage of these activities, if possible.
  • Small button-shape batteries contain large amounts of mercury and should not be thrown out with the rest of the trash. These items should be returned to the place where they were purchased or put into special collection boxes that are provided in some areas. Information is available from your local government office. Used batteries should be saved up and thrown away together.
