Pre-kindergartens (Childcare centers)

Nurseries
The definition of "nursery" here means a daycare center for small children. It is a place where small children are taken care of if their mothers are employed or unable to take care of them because of illness or birth complications, a type of social welfare-related facility for small children.

  • Procedures for entrance
    Please apply at the local ward, city, town or village office where you are registered as a foreign resident.
    In addition to the application form for using day care center, you will need a Certificate of Employment, a Certificate of Income (or Withholding Tax Certificate) to apply. You have the right to pick a specific childcare center so that you should investigate the various options open to you before applying. There are cases, where you will be asked to list your choices in order of your preference.

  • Receiving permission for entrance to a childcare center
    After you have submitted your application, a person from the local government welfare will call on you to investigate the reasons why you are unable to care for your child. After the application approval process, the persons with the highest level of need are permitted to make use of these social-welfare related childcare center to care for their children. If the center that you selected is full, you must wait for an opening.

    The Japanese school year begins in April so it is said that childcare centers tend to relatively more have openings around that time.

    * As a general rule, small children cannot be admitted to a childcare center until the vacation that its mother (or guardian) receives for the purposes of childbirth has ended. However, there are variations among the various local ward, city, town or village governments so that it is advisable to contact your area government office and get the specific details.

  • Childcare center hours:
    In general, childcare centers are open from 8:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the late afternoon. Childcare centers differ from each other in many different ways. Some have extended hours.

  • Childcare center charges
    The charges are calculated on the previous year's earnings of parent (or guardian) of the child.


Kindergartens
Kindergartens are for children from the ages of 3 to 5.

The various types of kindergartens are:

  1. Public kindergartens
    They admit children for either 2 or 3 years. The conditions vary by the area in which you are living.

  2. Private kindergartens
    They admit children for either 2 years or 3 years.
    They enroll children from the month of October.
